This week marks twenty – five years since Eritrea gained its independence from Ethiopia. Eritrea gained its independence back in 1993 after a thirty-year war against Ethiopia, which still continues today. Thousands were killed on both sides as a result of the war.
Eritrea is located in Eastern Africa and its capital Asmara. It is bordered by Sudan in the west and Ethiopia in the south. Borders issues remain controversial for the country.
Despite these issues, the Eritrean government has organised huge celebrations. One key celebration is a carnival held in the capital city Asmara, where people re-enact key moments from the war.
