Queen of Katwe is an upcoming biographical drama film set around a young girl who aspires to become a world chess champion. The movie which depicts the true story of Phiona Mutesi, 15, who is said to be the best female chess player in Uganda, tells the story of how the Mutesi stumbled upon the sport.
The movie which is set to be released in September 2016 features Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o and OBE David Oyelowo. Phiona Mutesi is played by Madina Nalwanga who makes her debut in the movie and has been tipped to be an Oscar winner this year.
Produced by Walt Disney Pictures and ESPN Films the movie is not only centred on the journey that Phiona Mutesi (Nalwanga) endures in relation to her attaining her chess title. It also tells a story of hardship that Phiona Mutesi (Nalwanga) and her mother Harriet (Nyong’o) face as they both sell vegetables in the rural area Katwe in the city of Kampala, Uganda, to make ends meets. The idea of Mutesi playing chess frightens her mother Harriet as she fears that her daughter might one day be disappointed. Despite this, after seeing the support her daughter receives from her community, her mother soon comes to the realisation that her talent could be the only thing that could save her from the life of poverty.
